About The Merry Hooker Woolens

The Merry Hooker Woolens is a small, craftsman-oriented business dedicated to providing hand dyed textiles of exceptional quality and related supplies to the fiber artist. The core of our business lies with ancient traditions of adding beautiful color to natural textiles through the process of the hand dyeing of small batches of wool and, occasionally, silk fibers.
In our dye studio, we honor the slow & labor-intensive steps necessary to obtain richly hand dyed woolens with good colorfastness, colors that permeate to the core of the fibers and a soft hand that make them a pleasure to work with. We don't rush the wool and we don't subscribe to the hurry-up method of dyeing.
Our customers include traditional rug hookers, quilters, appliqueists, garment makers, doll makers and artists of other disciplines with a need for fine hand dyed fibers. We primarily use acid-fast dyes but occasionally experiment with natural dyes & pigments in small batches. We pay loving attention to the details to ensure a product worthy of the time & care our customer's will ultimately put into the finished piece.

The Merry Hooker Woolens was born out of the lifelong passion of it's founder, Marita Friedman, for textiles.
Marita began sewing at the age of 10, taught herself to knit at age 12, and learned to weave & spin at age 20. Her first experiences in the dye kitchen were in a tiny little house in downtown Davis, California, just after graduating from college.

Still living in Northern California, not too far from that tiny house in Davis, Marita has returned to a life amongst textiles after attending graduate school at UC Berkeley, pursuing careers in nursing and genetic counseling, running a successful interior design business and raising a fine young man who is currently teaching English to grade school children in Be'er Sheva, Israel.
